Sharon
Sheridan works full time as an articled clerk while completing
her final year as a law student. She is married and has
2 pet Staffordshire terriers.
Sharon
only recently joined the Democrats, after being awakened
to politics by the Howard government's failure in many areas
of public policy. She believes that the Prime Minister and
his ministry have lost touch with what ordinary citizens
expect and need from their government.
The
Democrats' action plans describe and address many of the
problems Sharon sees in Australia today. She identifies
strongly with the Democrats philosophy that values justice,
democracy, individual freedom and diversity.
"The
Democrats want a prosperous, environmentally sustainable
and equitable economy; good, accountable governance and
responsible, peaceful engagement in the global community."
Sharon
has worked to support herself throughout her university
study, so has first hand experience of how difficult tertiary
study can be. She wants to see the HECS repayment threshold
increased, a repeal of the Voluntary Student Unionism legislation,
and the age of independence for students lowered to 18.
Sharon
also wants to see the Senate returned to being an effective
check on government, and believes this can best be achieved
with the Democrats in the balance of power role.
"For
many years the Democrats worked effectively in the balance
of power role, and demonstrated just what a positive influence
a third party can have on policy outcomes."
