Carolyn
Dianna Kerr was born in December, 1968, the daughter of
a fisherman she grew up in the small village of Crowdy Head,
NSW with a population of 300.
She finished high school at The Presbyterian Ladies College
in Armidale, NSW in 1984. She has a statement of attainment
in Secretarial Studies, a Diploma in Beauty Therapy and
a Certificate in Policing with the NSW Police Service in
which she was stationed in Inverell, NSW in 1988. She recently
achieved a Cert II in Security Operations and holds a 'Positive
Notice Blue Card' and she is currently going through the
process of becoming an emergency foster carer.
Ms Kerr is now working in the Security industry. She is
researching the planning and design of a future destination
point for youth, to excite them off the streets by providing
innovative entertainment with road safety and life education
skills. The destination point is being designed to provide
valuable financial sustainability for the Not-For-Profit,
Stakki Stikka road safety project. Carolyn founded Stakki
Stikka after witnessing a tragic accident where a young
man almost died because he was not wearing a helmet. She
realised it could have been one of her children and became
determined to address the issue in a common sense, effective
way. Her advocacy has resulted in her receiving a Premier's
road safety award and a CARRS-Q scholarship for post graduate
study in road safety
Carolyn moved her children to the Sunshine Coast in 1998
to give them all the opportunities life has to offer through
education, sport, lifestyle, health and careers. "But
then the cracks started to appear"; issues within the
education system; the Dr Death scandal and the exposure
of tragic issues in the health system; inferior and dangerous
road surfaces; youth deaths on the roads; the damage being
done to the commercial fishing industry; the obesity epidemic;
the deregulation of the dairy industry; overburdened emergency
services; the dark side of nightlife; taxes; the price of
fuel; the water crisis and the irreparable damage of the
proposed Traveston Dam... and don't forget Centrelink and
welfare-into-work; the links between the social impact on
families, child and domestic abuse, violence and crime are
not recognised.
Carolyn's frustrations with these issues and overlooked
links have driven her to work and fight for 'whole of community'
issues. She thinks we should utilize the 'wisdom of our
elders'. She is looking forward to representing the common
sense approach of the Democrats at a time when extremism
is tainting politics.
